LOCTITE® FREKOTE 44-NC™

Overview

LOCTITE® FREKOTE 44-NC™ is a solvent-based, semi-permanent mold release agent engineered for manufacturers who need a non-transferring release with minimal build-up. Unlike wax-based systems, FREKOTE 44-NC chemically bonds to the mold surface to form a micro-thin film that withstands cure temperatures up to 400°C, making it a reliable choice for composite, plastics, and rubber molding operations that demand consistent part quality across long production runs.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Better mold utilization — fewer reapplications keep production lines running longer between coatings.
  • Non-contaminating transfer — the semi-permanent film stays on the tool, not the part.
  • No mold build-up — reduces the need for aggressive stripping and mold refinishing.
  • Lower mold maintenance costs — a conditioned mold surface delivers consistent releases over more cycles.
  • High thermal stability — the cured film is stable at temperatures up to 400°C, well above most molding process conditions.

How to Apply LOCTITE® FREKOTE 44-NC™

Correct application is critical to getting the full service life out of FREKOTE 44-NC. Follow these directions for use:

  1. Clean and dry the mold surface thoroughly, removing all traces of prior release agent (Frekote PMC or Frekote 915WB work well for heavy build-up).
  2. New or freshly repaired fiberglass and epoxy molds should be fully cured per the manufacturer’s instructions—typically a minimum of 2–3 weeks at 22°C—and sealed with an appropriate Frekote mold sealer before the first coat of release agent.
  3. Apply FREKOTE 44-NC at room temperature up to 60°C by spraying, brushing, or wiping with a clean, lint-free cloth. If spraying, use a dry air source or airless system and hold the nozzle 20–30 cm from the mold surface.
  4. Apply 4 to 6 base coats, allowing 10–15 minutes between coats for solvent evaporation. Work progressively across small areas of the mold.
  5. Allow the final coat to cure for 3 hours at 22°C, or shorten cure time by baking the mold for 15 minutes at 100–150°C.
  6. Re-coat once after the first few pulls to further condition the mold surface and maximize release performance; touch up only the areas where release difficulty occurs.

Storage & Handling

FREKOTE 44-NC is classified as flammable and moisture sensitive—keep the container tightly closed when not in use and store away from oxidizing agents or combustible materials. Optimal storage temperature is 8°C to 21°C; storage below 8°C or above 28°C can adversely affect product properties. Always use in a well-ventilated area, and do not select this product as a sealant for chlorine or other strong oxidizing materials. Consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for complete handling information.

Applications & Compatible Materials

FREKOTE 44-NC is widely used across composite and plastics manufacturing wherever a non-transferring, long-lasting release is required, including automotive and transportation components, building and construction panels, electrical and electronics housings, marine vessel tooling, and wind energy blade molds. It effectively releases epoxies, polyester resins, thermoplastics, adhesives, and rotationally molded plastics without contaminating the finished part.
