SWANCOR 905-2

SWANCOR 905-2 is a brominated Bisphenol A type epoxy vinyl ester resin with excellent corrosion resistance and flame retardancy (ASTM E84 Class 1 achievable). Suitable for chemical storage tanks, pipes, FGD systems, scrubbers, ducts and grating.

Overview

SWANCOR 905-2 is a brominated Bisphenol A type epoxy vinyl ester resin. It provides excellent corrosion resistance to a broad range of organic and inorganic acids, alkalis, oxidizing chemicals and salt solutions, as good as standard Bisphenol A type resins. As one of the recommended international brand products in our resin range, it is supplied with supply chain resource support for fabricators sourcing a flame-retardant, corrosion-resistant vinyl ester resin for demanding FRP applications.

Key Benefits of SWANCOR 905-2

  • Excellent corrosion resistance to a broad range of organic and inorganic acids, alkalis, oxidizing chemicals and salt solutions
  • Very good mechanical strength, including tensile and flexural properties, when reinforced with glass fiber, carbon fiber or kevlar fiber
  • Excellent flame retardancy for FRP applications; ASTM E84 Class 1 can be achieved when incorporated with 3-5% antimony trioxide
  • Superior toughness with excellent fatigue resistance due to high heat distortion temperature

Applications

SWANCOR 905-2 is used in chemical storage tanks, pipes, fume gas desulfurizing systems (FGD), scrubbers, ducts and grating. It is also used for corrosion resistant flooring when incorporated with aggregates, equipment specified to handle mixtures of air, exhaust gases or potentially flammable liquids, and military applications such as Kevlar fiber based panels. SWANCOR 905-2 can comply with US FDA regulation 21 CFR 177.2440 if the resin is properly formulated and cured, and it can be easily applied by hand lay-up laminating, spray-up, pultrusion, resin transfer molding (RTM) and filament winding, as well as used in polymer concrete casting.

Flame Retardancy and Ignition Resistance

As a brominated resin, SWANCOR 905-2 is formulated to offer excellent flame retardancy for FRP applications. Per ASTM D2863, the Limiting Oxygen Index is 25 for unfilled laminates and rises to 35 when the laminate is filled with 3% antimony trioxide. In the ASTM E84 Tunnel Test, laminates filled with 3% antimony trioxide (25-30% glass fiber content) achieve a flame spread value of 8.4, and ASTM E84 Class 1 can be reached with 3-5% antimony trioxide loading.

This flame retardancy profile is one reason fabricators consider SWANCOR 905-2 for flue gas desulfurization systems, ducts, and equipment handling mixtures of air, exhaust gases, or potentially flammable liquids, where both chemical resistance and fire performance are required at the same time.

Why Corrosion Resistance and Heat Distortion Temperature Matter

Chemical storage tanks, scrubbers, and flue gas desulfurization systems are routinely exposed to a mix of acids, alkalis, oxidizing chemicals, and salt solutions that can degrade a resin not specifically engineered for chemical resistance. Because SWANCOR 905-2 provides excellent corrosion resistance across this broad range of chemical exposures, it is positioned to maintain structural integrity in demanding service conditions.

A heat distortion temperature of 106-110°C also contributes to superior toughness and excellent fatigue resistance, which matters for equipment that experiences repeated thermal or mechanical cycling, such as pipes, ducts, and grating in a processing environment. Fabricators should always confirm current heat distortion temperature, corrosion resistance data by chemical, and recommended cure schedule against the latest technical data sheet for their specific application.

What to Consider When Sourcing SWANCOR 905-2

When sourcing a flame-retardant, corrosion-resistant vinyl ester resin for chemical storage or processing equipment, fabricators typically evaluate chemical resistance data against their specific process chemistry, mechanical strength when reinforced, flame retardancy requirements, and compatibility with the reinforcement fiber already in use.

Because this resin achieves its mechanical strength when incorporated with reinforcement such as glass fiber, carbon fiber, or kevlar fiber, and its flame retardancy depends on antimony trioxide loading, fabricators should confirm current reinforcement compatibility, filler loading, and laminate schedule recommendations against the latest technical data sheet rather than assuming identical performance across every formulation.

General Handling and Storage Guidance

SWANCOR 905-2 contains organic solvent (styrene) and should be kept away from heat, sparks, and flames. It is a potentially reactive chemical and should be stored in the dark, away from heat and direct sunshine, in closed containers at temperatures below 25°C to ensure maximum stability and maintain optimum resin properties. Copper or copper-containing alloys should be avoided as containers, and containers that are not completely emptied must be closed immediately after use. If SWANCOR 905-2 is blended with cobalt-salt promoters, shelf life will be shortened, and promoted resin must be used within two weeks. Standard packing is 200 kg steel drums.
